TL;DR — Kasa EC71 vs Wyze Cam Pan v3 verdict
- Short answer: buy the Kasa EC71 if you want smart detection without a subscription — it detects people and a crying baby for free, and patrols a room on its own. Buy the Wyze Cam Pan v3 if you want color night vision, a weatherproof body you can also mount outside, and a real privacy mode — and you accept that person and pet detection sit behind a Cam Plus subscription. Both are 1080p pan-and-tilt cameras with the same 1/2.9-inch sensor class and the same 256 GB microSD ceiling.
- The twist in this comparison: the hardware is close enough that the subscription is the story. On Wyze's own product page, person, pet, vehicle and package detection — and even advanced sound alerts such as a crying baby — require Cam Plus on the Pan v3. Kasa's official EC71 documentation lists person and baby-crying detection as camera features, with no equivalent paywall stated. Over a few years, that difference can cost more than either camera.
- Where the EC71 wins: free person and baby-crying detection, Patrol Mode cycling up to four saved viewpoints, up to 16 activity zones, and an all-black finish.
- Where the Pan v3 wins: Color Night Vision from a starlight sensor (the EC71 is black-and-white only after dark), a wider 180° tilt, 20 fps daytime video, a physical Privacy Mode, an in-app siren, smoke and CO alarm sound alerts, IFTTT support, and an IP65 rating that lets it work outdoors with the right power adapter. Wyze also publishes a firm US price: $44.98 for a single camera on wyze.com.
- What is identical: 1080p Full HD video with H.264 compression, a 1/2.9-inch sensor, 360° pan with motion tracking, a four-waypoint patrol on both sides (Patrol Mode vs Pan Scan), motion and sound detection, two-way audio, microSD recording up to 256 GB with no required subscription, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and Alexa and Google Assistant support. Neither camera supports Apple HomeKit, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or a spotlight.
- How to read this: a spec-based comparison built from Kasa/TP-Link's official EC71 product page and user guide and Wyze's official Pan v3 product page and support tech specs, checked in October 2026. We did not hands-on test either camera for this article.
Overview
The Kasa EC71 (sold as the Kasa Spot Pan Tilt) and the Wyze Cam Pan v3 are the two cameras budget buyers cross-shop most in the 1080p pan-and-tilt class, and on a spec sheet they look like the same product wearing different uniforms. Both record 1920 × 1080 through a 1/2.9-inch sensor. Both pan a full 360°, track motion automatically, patrol between four saved viewpoints, record around the clock to a microSD card of up to 256 GB, and talk to Alexa and Google Assistant. If you have read our Kasa EC71 review and our Wyze Cam Pan v3 review, you already know each camera on its own — this head-to-head exists because the differences that matter are not the ones on the box.
They split in two directions. Wyze built the more capable piece of hardware: a starlight sensor that keeps color in near-darkness, a head that tilts a full 180° from straight up to straight down, a privacy mode that physically turns the lens into the body, and an IP65 rating that lets the same camera watch a porch if you add the outdoor power adapter. Kasa built the more generous software deal: the smart detection that makes a camera useful — telling a person from a swaying plant, hearing a baby cry — is simply included, where Wyze reserves exactly those alerts for its Cam Plus subscription on this model. Which split matters more depends on whether you would rather pay once for hardware or keep paying for alerts, and the rest of this article works through the trade row by row.

Source note: all figures are from official sources only — kasasmart.com and the official EC71 user guide for the Kasa camera, wyze.com and support.wyze.com for the Pan v3 — checked October 2026. *Wyze publishes no night-vision distance for the Pan v3 on its official product or tech-spec pages, so none is quoted here; figures on retailer sites are not Wyze data. Two honesty flags: Wyze's own blog lists the Pan v3 at $39.99 while its live product page and store data say $44.98 — we use the product page. And the EC71's storage and power figures changed over the model's life (the current kasasmart.com page lists 256 GB and a 5.0V/1.0A adapter; the 2023 datasheet said 64 GB and 9.0V/0.6A) — the table uses the current page.
Design and coverage: ball versus cube, both patrol
The two cameras could not look more different doing the same job. The EC71 is a black ball head on a short cylindrical base — Kasa promoted it as the first all-black Kasa indoor pan-tilt, and on dark furniture it all but disappears. The Pan v3 is a two-part cube design, a square camera head riding on a motorized arm above a square base, sold in white or black; Wyze publishes full dimensions (124 × 60 × 63 mm) and a 320 g weight, while Kasa gives the EC71 as 3.2 × 3.2 × 4.4 inches. Neither is large, and both include mounting hardware — the Pan v3 uses a standard 1/4-inch screw mount and can hang upside down.
Coverage is where the Pan v3 quietly pulls ahead. Both heads pan a full 360°, but Wyze's tilt range is 180° — straight up to straight down — against Kasa's published 113° vertical view for the EC71. A Pan v3 on a high shelf can look down its own wall; an EC71 needs more careful placement to cover the floor directly beneath it. Wyze also publishes the lens figure Kasa does not: a 120° field of view with 8x digital zoom, and a rotation speed of up to 110° per second, which is why the Pan v3 feels quick when it swings to follow movement. Kasa publishes the EC71's lens as f/2.4 with a 3.83 mm focal length and no separate field of view, so we do not invent one.
Patrol, unusually, is a tie — and it is the feature that defines this class. The EC71's Patrol Mode cycles up to four saved viewpoints automatically at a speed and interval you choose. The Pan v3's Pan Scan does the same job with up to four custom waypoints. Either camera can be left alone to sweep crib, door, window, crib all day instead of waiting for motion to give it a reason to move. That parity is exactly why both models anchor our roundup of the best pan-and-tilt indoor cameras — and why the decision between them has to be made on other rows.

Video and night vision: same resolution, different darkness
Daylight video is close to a tie with one Wyze edge. Both cameras record 1920 × 1080 with H.264 compression through the same 1/2.9-inch sensor class. The Pan v3 records at 20 fps in daylight against the EC71's 15 fps, so motion — a toddler crossing the room, a dog bolting for the door — is rendered with a few more frames per second on the Wyze side. It is a real but modest advantage; neither camera reaches the 2K class, and if sharper footage is what would change your decision, our Wyze Cam Pan v4 vs Pan v3 comparison shows exactly what the step up to 4K buys over this shared 1080p baseline.
After dark, the comparison stops being close. The EC71 uses a single 850 nm infrared LED rated to 30 feet and records black-and-white footage — competent, standard, and the same recipe as most of the budget class. The Pan v3 carries four IR LEDs for its black-and-white mode and adds the feature that defines it: Color Night Vision from a starlight sensor, which keeps recording in color in light levels Wyze describes as up to 25 times darker than a traditional camera needs. Color at night is not a gimmick — a jacket's color or a car's color is often the detail that matters — and it is the Pan v3's single strongest hardware argument. Two honest limits: Wyze publishes no night-vision range in feet for this camera, so we quote none, and there is no spotlight on either camera (Wyze states plainly that the Pan v3 is not even compatible with its Spotlight Kit), so the color comes from sensitivity, not illumination.

Detection: the subscription is the story
Both cameras detect motion and sound for free, track movement by turning to follow it, and let you draw detection zones so a ceiling fan stops generating alerts — Kasa publishes the more specific zoning figure, up to 16 custom zones from the EC71's official user guide. Both also listen for trouble beyond motion: the Pan v3 adds free smoke and CO alarm sound alerts, a genuinely useful safety net the EC71 does not list.
Then the models divide on the alerts most buyers actually want. Kasa's official EC71 documentation — the user-guide spec table and Kasa's own feature graphics — lists motion, person and baby-crying detection as camera features. Wyze's product page is equally explicit in the other direction: on the Pan v3, person, pet, vehicle and package detection, and advanced sound notifications such as a crying baby or a barking pet, require a Cam Plus subscription; the older free Cam Plus Lite tier is not available on this camera at all. Read that carefully if the camera is destined for a nursery: the EC71 will tell you the baby is crying as part of the purchase, while the Pan v3 hears the cry and asks for a subscription before it tells you what it heard. Wyze's Web View is likewise gated behind its paid plans. None of this makes the Pan v3 a bad camera — Cam Plus also removes the free tier's event limits — but over a two- or three-year life, the subscription can exceed the price difference between these cameras several times over, and it never stops. Buyers comparing total cost, not shelf price, should start here. It is also the sharpest contrast with the EC71's previous outing on this site, our Kasa EC71 vs Tapo C200 head-to-head, where both TP-Link cameras included the same free detection set and the fight was about apps and storage instead.
Audio, privacy, storage and the outdoors
Two-way audio is standard on both — built-in microphone and speaker — with Wyze adding noise and echo cancellation to its spec sheet. The Pan v3 also has a siren you can trigger from the app; Wyze publishes no loudness rating for it, so treat it as a startle-and-deter button rather than a measured alarm, and note the EC71 lists no siren at all.

Privacy is a clean Pan v3 win. Its Privacy Mode rotates the lens 180° down into the camera body and switches the camera off — a physical, visible guarantee that nothing is being watched, which matters in bedrooms and living rooms. Kasa's EC71 product page lists no privacy mode; muting alerts is not the same thing. Storage, by contrast, is a genuine tie: both cameras record continuously to microSD cards up to 256 GB with no subscription required, both overwrite the oldest footage when the card fills, and both offer an optional cloud plan on top (Kasa Care's 30-day history on one side, Cam Plus on the other). Neither lists RTSP or ONVIF in its official specifications, so if feeding a recorder or a NAS is the plan, look elsewhere in this class rather than trusting retailer tables for either model.
Finally, the Pan v3 has a second life the EC71 cannot match: an IP65 weather rating. Indoors it is irrelevant; outdoors — a porch, a garage, a driveway wall — it makes the Pan v3 a legitimate option with Wyze's outdoor power adapter (sold separately, and required: the rating depends on the card-slot cover and proper power). The EC71 has no weather rating and stays inside. One camera, two placements is real flexibility, and for renters who may move the camera between a nursery and a front step, it can settle the comparison on its own.
Pros and cons

Who should buy which — and the verdict
Buy the Kasa EC71 if the camera's main job is watching a nursery or a living room and you refuse to rent your alerts: free person and baby-crying detection, patrol between four viewpoints, and 16 activity zones make it the better subscription-free monitor, and its black finish suits the dark furniture most nurseries and TV stands come with. Our Kasa EC71 review covers the camera in full.
Buy the Wyze Cam Pan v3 if the camera will work after dark, might move outdoors, or sits somewhere a physical privacy mode earns trust: color night vision, the 180° tilt, IP65 flexibility and a known $44.98 price make it the stronger hardware buy — provided you budget honestly for Cam Plus if you want person and pet alerts. Our Wyze Cam Pan v3 review covers where its 1080p ceiling starts to bite.
Buy neither if you need 2K or 4K detail, a spotlight, Apple HomeKit or 5 GHz Wi-Fi — neither camera offers any of those on its official specifications.
Verdict: the Pan v3 is the better camera; the EC71 is the better deal. Wyze wins more hardware rows — night color, tilt, privacy, weather — and publishes a fair price for them. Kasa wins the row that recurs every month: the smart detection Wyze charges for is simply included. If you will never pay for Cam Plus, buy the EC71 and do not look back. If you will pay it anyway, the Pan v3's hardware earns the subscription back.
FAQ
Is the Wyze Cam Pan v3 a 2K camera?
No. Wyze's official product page and tech specs both list the Pan v3 at 1920 × 1080 (1080p) — the same resolution as the Kasa EC71. Wyze's 2K-and-above pan-tilt model is the newer Pan v4, a different camera.
Which camera detects a crying baby without a subscription?
The Kasa EC71. Its official user-guide spec table lists baby-crying detection as a camera feature. On the Pan v3, Wyze's product page places advanced sound notifications — including a crying baby — behind a Cam Plus subscription.
Can the Wyze Cam Pan v3 really be used outdoors?
Yes, with conditions. It carries an IP65 rating, but Wyze's own FAQ says outdoor use requires the SD-card-slot cover and the Wyze Outdoor Power Adapter v2, sold separately. The Kasa EC71 has no weather rating and is an indoor-only camera.
Do both cameras record without any subscription?
Yes. Both record continuously to a microSD card up to 256 GB (sold separately) with motion tracking and patrol included. What a subscription changes is cloud history and, on the Wyze side, the smart person/pet/vehicle detection — local recording itself is free on both.
Which camera is better at night?
The Pan v3, on specifications. The EC71 records black-and-white infrared footage rated to 30 ft; the Pan v3 adds Color Night Vision from a starlight sensor for near-dark rooms, alongside its own infrared mode. Wyze publishes no range figure for the Pan v3, so the win is about color information, not a verified distance.
Where to buy
Wyze publishes its price and Kasa does not, so compare street prices on the same day — and if you are leaning Wyze and want smart detection, price a year of Cam Plus into the comparison before deciding. Budget for a microSD card either way, since neither box includes one.
