TL;DR The Kasa EC71 is TP-Link's black 1080p pan-tilt indoor camera: 360° horizontal pan, 113° vertical tilt, motion tracking, 30-ft night vision, two-way audio, and sound/baby-crying alerts. It stores footage locally on a microSD card (up to 256GB) with no subscription required, or on Kasa Care cloud. It usually sells for under $30, which makes it one of the cheapest credible baby/pet monitor cameras. Weak spots: 1080p only (no 2K), 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only, and it's indoor-only.

Overview

The Kasa EC71 (sold as the "Kasa Spot Pan Tilt") is TP-Link's smart-home brand Kasa's take on the budget pan-tilt indoor camera. It was the first Kasa indoor pan-tilt to ship in an all-black finish, which was a deliberate design choice: most budget indoor cameras are white, and a black camera blends into a bookshelf or media center far better than a white one does.

Positioning-wise, it sits in the same sub-$30 pan-tilt lane as TP-Link's other smart-home brand camera, the Tapo C200 review — same parent company, similar concept, but the EC71 gets the black body and is pitched more explicitly as a baby and pet monitor.

Key features

Full-room coverage with tracking

The 360° pan and 113° tilt range covers a whole room from a single shelf or wall mount. Motion tracking makes the camera head follow movement, and Patrol Mode cycles through up to four viewpoints you define. If you're comparing motorized indoor cameras head-to-head, our Reolink E1 Pro vs Wyze Cam Pan v3 comparison shows what the pricier pan-tilt options add.

Baby-crying and sound detection

TP-Link lists motion, person, and baby-crying detection in the EC71's official user-guide spec table, and its manufacturer-supplied listing has a dedicated "Sound & Baby Cry Detection" section. Push alerts fire when a cry or other sound is detected, which is what makes the EC71 a legitimate stand-in for a dedicated video baby monitor. See our best indoor cameras for a nursery roundup if the nursery is your main use case.

Two-way audio

Built-in mic and speaker let you talk back through the camera — for soothing a baby, scolding a pet off the couch, or just checking in. The Kasa app supports live view and full-duplex-style conversation rather than walkie-talkie back-and-forth.

Free local storage, optional cloud

Footage records 24/7 to a microSD card (up to 256GB per the current Kasa page) with no subscription — the app plays it back directly. Kasa Care cloud plans are optional if you want off-site backup and 30-day history.

Smart-home integration

Works with Alexa and Google Assistant for voice-activated live view on supported displays, and Kasa's Smart Actions can tie the camera to other Kasa plugs, bulbs, and switches (e.g. a camera alert turns on a Kasa light).

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Pan + tilt with motion tracking and patrol mode for under $30 street price
  • Baby-crying and sound detection genuinely make it a budget baby monitor
  • Subscription-free 24/7 local recording to microSD (up to 256GB)
  • Up to 16 customizable activity zones at no charge
  • All-black finish looks better in a living room than most white budget cams
  • Alexa + Google Assistant live-view support

Cons

  • 1080p / 15fps only — no 2K option in this line
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only (no 5GHz)
  • Indoor-only; not weather-rated
  • Kasa has not published an official MSRP on its product page, so pricing is entirely street-price dependent
  • Person/baby-cry detection behavior in the app isn't documented in detail — it's a marketing bullet more than a explained feature

Who it's for

The EC71 is for anyone who wants a pan-tilt indoor camera for nursery, pet, or general room monitoring without paying for a subscription or a premium brand. At its typical street price it undercuts most competitors while offering the core feature set: pan/tilt, tracking, night vision, two-way talk, and sound alerts. It belongs on our best indoor cameras under $40 shortlist for exactly that reason.

Pet monitoring is the EC71's other natural job — pan the room, track the dog, talk back through the speaker. (Official TP-Link photo.)

It's not for: people who want 2K resolution (see the eufy IndoorCam C210 review for what a step-up fixed 1080p cam looks like, or step into 2K pan-tilt territory), anyone on 5GHz-only networks, or outdoor use.

FAQ

Is the Kasa EC71 a real product?

Yes. It's listed on Kasa's official US site (kasasmart.com) as the "Kasa Spot Pan Tilt," model EC71, and TP-Link published an official datasheet and user guide for it in 2023. It's sold at major US retailers including Amazon (ASIN B0BXMSS8Z7) and B&H.

Does the Kasa EC71 have baby crying detection?

Yes. TP-Link lists "baby crying detection" in the EC71's official user-guide specification table, and its manufacturer-supplied product copy includes a dedicated sound/baby-cry detection section. Alerts arrive as push notifications through the Kasa Smart app. Exactly how the app exposes the setting isn't documented on the product page, so expect a detection/notification toggle rather than a full baby-monitor dashboard.

Does the Kasa EC71 need a subscription?

No. It records 24/7 to a local microSD card (up to 256GB) that you buy separately, and the Kasa app plays back that footage with no subscription. Kasa Care cloud plans are optional.

What is the difference between the Kasa EC71 and the Kasa EC70?

The EC71 is the all-black pan-tilt successor; the older EC70 is the white 1080p pan-tilt. The EC71 was marketed as Kasa's first indoor pan-tilt in an all-black finish. Functionally they're similar cameras, but the EC71 is the current model on Kasa's US site.

Does the Kasa EC71 work with Alexa and Google Home?

Yes. It's compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, including voice-activated live view on supported displays (e.g. Echo Show or Chromecast-connected screens).
