Best Indoor Cameras Under $40
Under $40 we prefer the Wyze Cam v4 when it is on sale, and the Tapo C225 when a sale brings pan and tilt under the line. The Blink Mini 2 is only the pick if you already pay Blink.

Under $40, the indoor camera market is a trap and a bargain at the same time. The bargain is a known plug-in camera with a card slot: the Wyze Cam v4 when the sale is real. The trap is a tiny camera whose useful features start the month you stop being a new customer. We would rather you spend a few dollars more on a Tapo C225 than feel clever about a Blink Mini 2 you will subscribe to in order to see Tuesday.
What you should demand at this price is dull. A plug, a brand you can update, a resolution of at least 1080p and preferably 2K, and a place in the house for the video to sit. Two-way talk is common even on the cheap models and it is fine. Person detection that vanishes unless you pay is not fine, and it is the line we use on the no monthly fee guide.
A cheap camera is also the right second camera. Put the money into an S350 in the living room if you can, and let a Wyze Cam v4 watch the hall. Do not invert that. Four budget cameras with four blind spots feel like a system and behave like a group chat.
What under $40 usually buys
| Camera | Typical ask | Recording without a plan | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wyze Cam v4 | Often near or under $40 | microSD | Fixed view, spotlight for color night |
| Tapo C225 | Sometimes on sale under $40 | microSD | Jumps over $40 at full price, and it is worth it |
| Blink Mini 2 | Often the cheapest | Weak unless you add a plan or Sync Module | The plan is the product |
Street prices move weekly. If the C225 is $45, it is still the camera we would stretch for.
The camera we would actually take under $40
The Wyze Cam v4 is the default. Wyze lists 2.5K, a spotlight for color night vision, and a microSD slot. You aim it at one place. That is a complete camera for a door or a desk, and the card means you are not renting your own hallway. When the Tapo C225 drops under $40, we switch the preference. Pan, a shutter, and starlight night vision are a better cheap camera than a fixed one, and the C225 review explains why we treat it as the budget pan champion even a few dollars over the line.
The Blink Mini 2 wins the sticker and loses the category unless your house already pays for Blink. Person alerts and a useful history are the paid part of that ecosystem. A $25 camera plus a monthly plan is not an under-$40 camera. It is a subscription with a lens.
Where a cheap camera is a false economy
Do not buy three no-name 1080p cameras because the bundle looks like coverage. You will have three apps, three firmware risks, and no clear place your video lives. One known brand, a card, and a second camera later is the calmer bill. If the room is large, leave this page and read the S350 review. Saving $80 to miss the far side of the sofa is not thrift.
Also skip any listing that will not say whether a microSD card is supported. If the only memory is a cloud trial, the trial is the price.
Where to check the current price

Questions people ask before they buy
Is 2K worth it under $40?
Yes, when the Wyze Cam v4 or a Tapo is at that price. The jump from 1080p is visible if you crop in on a face at the door.
Do I need a fancy memory card?
A reputable microSD card, in the size the camera lists, is enough. Buy the card with the camera so you are not surprised that the slot is empty.
What if everything decent is $45 this week?
Buy the C225. The cap in the title is a search, not a law. Five dollars should not push you into a camera that needs a plan.
