Arlo Essential Indoor Camera Review

The Arlo Essential Indoor Camera makes sense when you already pay for Arlo. It is a fixed plug-in camera with a privacy shutter. It is not our value pick against a Tapo C225.

Arlo Essential Indoor Camera Review

Bestindoorcam.com may earn a commission if you buy through a store link. That does not change which camera we prefer. Read how affiliate links and ads work and how we review.

The Arlo Essential Indoor Camera is a fixed, plug-in indoor camera with a privacy shutter and a home in the Arlo app. We prefer it when Arlo Secure is already a bill you accept for other Arlo cameras. We do not prefer it as a place to start. A new plan plus a 1080p-class fixed camera loses, on the merits we care about, to a Tapo C225.

Use the shutter. It is the best hardware idea on the device, and it is the idea Arlo shares with cameras we recommend more often. A shutter on a subscription camera is still a subscription.

Confirm the exact Essential indoor SKU. Arlo reuses names. You want to know the resolution, whether a hub is in the box, and what Secure costs for the number of cameras you will actually add. Then compare that total with a card and a Tapo before you call the Arlo the simple choice.

Count your Arlo cameras before you add this one. Secure plans often change price with the device count, and an indoor camera can be the one that tips the tier. If the yard cameras already justify the plan, the indoor Essential is a small addition and the shutter is welcome. If this would be Arlo camera number one, the tier is the whole purchase, and a Tapo with a card is the calmer way to see a single room.

Arlo has used Essential on more than one indoor body. Confirm shutter, resolution, and whether a base station is required for the exact SKU.

An Arlo house, not a new plan

If Arlo cameras are already the way you see the yard, an indoor Essential with a shutter keeps one app and one Secure plan. Buy it for that reason. The shutter is why we would take it over a no-shutter budget camera inside an Arlo house. If you own no Arlo gear, do not let a white camera with a shutter talk you into Secure. The C225 has a shutter, a motor, 2K, and a card.

This is the same pattern as Ring and Nest. The brand is the subscription. We are consistent about that on the no-fee guide.

Fixed view

It will not pan. Aim it at one door or one corner and test the shutter. Some Essential kits have, in past generations, expected a hub. Read the current box so you do not discover a missing base station after the outlet is chosen.

Where to check the current price

Street prices move with sales. These links search a major retailer for the model named in this review. Confirm the exact model number on the listing before you pay.

Questions people ask before they buy

Is Arlo required to see the camera live?

You can usually open a live view in the Arlo account. The recorded history that makes the camera feel finished is the plan. Confirm the current free tier. Do not budget on a forum post from a different year.

Does it work with Alexa or Google?

Arlo has offered those integrations. Test the one you care about. Neither integration removes Secure if you want cloud history.

What should I buy instead?

A Tapo C225 for pan, shutter, and a card. A Wyze Cam v4 for a fixed card camera. An S350 if the room is large.
