TL;DR The Nanit Pro is a premium Wi-Fi baby monitor, not a general-purpose security camera: a 1080p HD camera on an overhead Floor Stand or Wall Mount that streams to the Nanit app, tracks temperature and humidity, offers two-way audio, a nightlight and white noise, and — with the included sensor-free Breathing Band (0–3 months) — monitors breathing motion with no wearable sensor. Nanit lists the camera-only system at $289.99 in the US ($399 with the optional 8-inch display). Core live viewing and alerts work without a subscription, but the sleep tracking, Cry Detection and video history that justify the price need a paid Insights plan after the included 3-month Sleep Plan trial.

Overview

The Nanit Pro Camera is built around one idea: an overhead, bird's-eye view of the crib, analysed by software. Instead of a shelf camera pointed at the room, the Pro mounts above the crib on either a Floor Stand or a Wall Mount, looks straight down, and uses that fixed view to track sleep, detect motion and sound, and — when your baby wears the included Breathing Band — follow breathing motion without any electronic sensor touching the baby. It is a fixture of shortlists like our best indoor cameras for a nursery guide precisely because no ordinary indoor camera attempts that overhead sleep-tracking job.

The Pro is designed for a fixed overhead crib view — the position its sleep tracking depends on. (Official Nanit product photo.)

That specialisation cuts both ways. The Pro does not pan or tilt, has no local microSD recording, and keeps its smartest features behind Nanit's Insights membership. Parents who only want a live picture and a cry alert can spend far less — the trade-offs are laid out in the sections below, based only on Nanit's own published specifications.

Specs verified against nanit.com — the official US Smart Baby Monitor product page, its FAQs and Nanit's membership pages (October 2026). Two honesty notes: Nanit does not publish a night-vision range, a frame rate or a standalone camera-only dimension set on its US product page, so none is claimed here; and while some third-party manuals describe dual-band Wi-Fi, Nanit's own current US product page states 2.4GHz is required, so plan for a 2.4GHz network.

Key features

Overhead 1080p HD view, day and night

The camera's fixed overhead position is the product. From the Floor Stand (up to 67 inches tall, with an ASTM-certified cord cover) or the Wall Mount, the Pro sees the whole crib in 1080p HD, switches to night vision after dark, and streams to iOS and Android phones and tablets. There is no motor to move — if whole-room coverage from one spot matters more than crib analytics, a motorised model in our best pan-and-tilt indoor cameras roundup is the more flexible tool.

Sensor-free Breathing Motion Monitoring

The included Breathing Band (0–3 months) carries a printed pattern the camera reads from above, letting the Pro track the rise and fall of your baby's chest and report breathing motion — and breaths per minute — in the app, with an alert if breathing motion is not detected. No sensor, wire or sock is attached to the baby. Nanit notes an overhead mount is recommended for nightly use, though breathing monitoring also works on the optional Flex Stand.

Sleep tracking and Insights — where the subscription lives

With an Insights plan, the Pro auto-captures sleep data, maintains a live-status sleep dashboard, adds Cry Detection and other Smart Alerts, and saves video history and milestone moments. Nanit's current US tiers are the Sleep Plan at $9/mo, the Memories Plan at $10/mo and the Milestones Plan at $25/mo, all billed annually, and every camera includes a 3-month free trial of the Sleep Plan (auto-renewing unless cancelled). Sleep tracking only works from the overhead Floor Stand or Wall Mount — not from the Flex Stand. That ongoing cost is the single biggest difference from the cameras in our best indoor cameras with no monthly fee guide.

Temperature, humidity, two-way audio, nightlight and sounds

Without any plan, the Pro still reports nursery temperature and humidity in the app, sends real-time sound and motion notifications, keeps background audio running, and offers two-way talk, a built-in nightlight, and white noise and nature sounds from the camera itself — a fuller built-in soothing kit than most nursery cameras, including the simpler models covered in our Kasa EC71 review.

Split Screen, Care Logs and a parenting team

The app supports Split Screen viewing of two cameras, Picture in Picture, and Care Logs where caregivers record sleep, feedings and diaper changes in one place. Access can be shared with up to two users with adjustable permissions without a plan, with more users unlocked on higher tiers — useful for a partner, grandparent or babysitter without handing over your account.

Security: 256-bit AES and mandatory MFA

Nanit states the video feed is protected with 256-bit AES encryption — the level it compares to banking apps — with mandatory multi-factor authentication built in, and it only allows connections to open or unsecured networks if you opt in. For a camera that lives over a crib and streams to the cloud, that published security posture is a genuine part of the buying case.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • True overhead crib view in 1080p HD with night vision — no other mainstream nursery camera is built around it
  • Sensor-free breathing motion monitoring with the included Breathing Band (0–3M)
  • Sleep tracking, sleep dashboard and personalised guidance on Insights plans
  • Temperature and humidity tracking, two-way audio, nightlight and white noise included without a subscription
  • 256-bit AES encryption with mandatory multi-factor authentication
  • Split Screen, Picture in Picture, Care Logs and multi-user access in one app
  • HSA/FSA eligible; Floor Stand needs no drilling and moves room to room

Cons

  • Premium price: $289.99 camera-only on nanit.com, before any plan
  • The headline features — sleep analytics, Cry Detection, video history — require a paid Insights plan after the 3-month trial (plans billed annually)
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only per Nanit's US product page; no 5GHz
  • Fixed view: no pan, tilt or zoom motor; sleep tracking fails on the portable Flex Stand
  • No local storage — no microSD slot, so history lives in Nanit's cloud
  • Breathing Band included is only the 0–3 month size; larger Breathing Wear is an extra purchase

Who it's for

The Nanit Pro is for new parents who want more than a picture: a fixed overhead crib view, breathing motion monitoring without a wearable sensor, and sleep data they can act on — and who accept a premium upfront price plus an annual Insights plan as the cost of that system. The Floor Stand version suits renters and anyone who cannot drill; the Wall Mount version suits a permanent nursery. It also earns its place in our best indoor cameras for a nursery roundup for exactly that first-year, crib-centred job.

It's not for: anyone who wants a one-off purchase with no subscription (a local-storage camera like the one in our Reolink E1 Pro review fits better), whole-room or multi-room coverage from a single device, 5GHz-only networks, or monitoring beyond the crib years where a general indoor camera is cheaper and more flexible.

FAQ

Does the Nanit Pro require a subscription?

No — but the smartest features do. Nanit states an Insights plan is not required to use the monitor: live HD streaming, real-time sound and motion notifications, background audio, temperature and humidity tracking, two-way audio, white noise and nature sounds, the nightlight and up to two users all work without one. Sleep tracking and analytics, Cry Detection, saved video history and milestone capture require an Insights plan (Sleep $9/mo, Memories $10/mo, Milestones $25/mo, billed annually) after the included 3-month Sleep Plan trial ends.

How does Nanit breathing monitoring work without a sensor?

The included Breathing Band (0–3 months) has a custom printed pattern. From its overhead position, the Pro Camera reads that pattern to detect the motion of your baby's breathing, reports breathing motion and breaths per minute in the app, and alerts you if it needs your attention. Nothing electronic touches the baby. Nanit recommends an overhead Floor Stand or Wall Mount for nightly use.

What is the difference between the Floor Stand and Wall Mount?

Both give the same overhead bird's-eye view and both support sleep tracking. The Floor Stand (maximum height 67 inches, 12-inch base width) is freestanding, needs no drilling, can slide under a crib or bassinet and can move between rooms, with an ASTM-certified cord cover. The Wall Mount fixes permanently to the wall beside the crib and is the more space-saving, toddler-proof option. On nanit.com both camera-only systems are listed at the same $289.99.

Does the Nanit Pro work with Alexa and Google Home?

Yes, with caveats Nanit itself flags. The Nanit experience is accessible from iOS and Android devices, Alexa and Apple Watch; with Alexa you can view the live stream, hear audio, ask about your baby's night and control the nightlight. Nanit lists Google Home and web streaming via my.nanit.com as available with an Insights Plan.

Can the Nanit Pro travel or work in another room?

The camera head snaps out of its overhead mount and into the optional Flex Stand (sold separately), which gives a 130° wide-angle room view instead of the overhead crib view, and the camera remembers up to 10 Wi-Fi networks for reconnecting away from home. Breathing Motion Monitoring works on the Flex Stand, but Nanit is explicit that sleep tracking does not — full sleep analytics need the overhead Floor Stand or Wall Mount.
