TL;DR The Kasa EC70 is TP-Link Kasa's original white 1080p pan-tilt indoor camera: 360° horizontal pan, 113° vertical tilt, motion tracking, 30-ft night vision, two-way audio, and motion/sound alerts. It records 24/7 to a microSD card (up to 256GB per the current Kasa page) with no subscription required, or to Kasa Care cloud. Street prices run around $21–30, often a few dollars less than the newer black EC71 it predates. Weak spots: 1080p only (no 2K), 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only, indoor-only — and its detection spec depends on hardware revision (see below).

Overview

The Kasa EC70 (sold as the "Kasa Spot Pan Tilt") is the white 1080p pan-tilt camera that established Kasa's budget indoor line. It is the predecessor to the black EC71: same basic formula — a motorized camera head on a round base, controlled from the Kasa Smart app — in the white finish that dominated the segment for years.

Because it is the older model, the EC70 is now primarily a value pick: it still appears on Kasa's official US site and at major retailers, frequently discounted below its successor. If you are cross-shopping TP-Link's two smart-home brands, our Tapo C200 review covers the closest equivalent from the Tapo side of the house.

Specs verified against kasasmart.com — official Kasa EC70 product page, the TP-Link EC70(US) V4.8 datasheet, and the official TP-Link user guide. Official documents disagree in places: the 2024 V4.8 datasheet lists a 1/3" sensor with a 4mm f/2.0 lens and microSD support up to 512GB, while the original 2020 manual listed microSD up to 64GB. Where they differ, the current Kasa product page figure is used above and the discrepancy is recorded in our research log — the EC70 has been through several hardware revisions, so check your unit's version.

Key features

Full-room coverage with tracking

The 360° pan and 113° tilt range lets one camera cover a whole room from a shelf, table, or the included wall/ceiling mount. Motion tracking turns the head to follow movement, and Patrol Mode cycles through up to four viewpoints you set. For a wider comparison of motorized models, see our roundup of the best pan and tilt indoor cameras.

Motion and sound alerts — with a version caveat

The EC70's product-page specification lists motion detection and sound detection as its alert triggers, with push notifications through the Kasa app. TP-Link's latest EC70 datasheet (V4.8, 2024) goes further and lists person detection and baby-crying detection. That means newer EC70 units offer more than the original spec — but if baby-cry alerts are the deciding feature for you, the safer buy is the successor covered in our Kasa EC71 review, where baby-crying detection is documented in the official user guide from launch. Nursery shoppers should also browse our best indoor cameras for a nursery roundup before deciding.

Two-way audio

A built-in microphone and speaker let you listen in and talk back through the app — checking in on family, calming a pet, or greeting someone at home. The speaker sits on the back of the camera head, as shown below.

Free local storage, optional cloud

The EC70 records around the clock to a microSD card — up to 256GB per the current Kasa page — and the app plays footage back with no subscription. When the card fills, the oldest files are overwritten. Kasa Care cloud plans are available if you want off-site clip storage on top.

Smart-home integration

It works with Alexa and Google Assistant for voice-activated live view on supported displays, and Kasa Smart Actions can link the camera to other Kasa devices — for example, having a Kasa light switch on when the camera detects motion.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Pan + tilt with motion tracking and patrol mode at a street price often around $21–30
  • Subscription-free 24/7 local recording to microSD (up to 256GB per current page)
  • Up to 16 customizable activity zones at no charge
  • Two-way audio and instant motion/sound alerts
  • Alexa + Google Assistant live-view support
  • Frequently discounted below the newer EC71 while covering the same core spec sheet

Cons

  • 1080p / 15fps only — no 2K option
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only (no 5GHz)
  • Indoor-only; not weather-rated
  • Spec drift across hardware revisions: detection features, sensor/lens figures, and microSD limits differ between the 2020 manual, the current product page, and the 2024 V4.8 datasheet
  • White finish only — if you want black, that's the EC71
  • No official MSRP on Kasa's product page, so pricing is entirely street-price dependent

Who it's for

The EC70 is for buyers who want the proven Kasa pan-tilt formula at the lowest price: apartment and dorm monitoring, pet watching, and general room coverage where 1080p is enough and a subscription is not welcome. It earns its place on our best indoor cameras under $40 shortlist on value alone.

It's not for: buyers who specifically need documented baby-crying detection on every unit (choose the EC71), anyone who wants 2K resolution, anyone on a 5GHz-only network, or outdoor use.

FAQ

Is the Kasa EC70 still worth buying, or should I get the EC71?

On specs, the two are close: both current Kasa pages list 1080p/15fps video, the same sensor and lens figures, 360°/113° pan-tilt, 30-ft night vision, and up to 256GB microSD. The EC71 is the newer, all-black model with baby-crying detection documented from launch. The EC70 in white is worth it when it's discounted — which it often is — and you don't need the black finish or the guaranteed detection set.

Does the Kasa EC70 have baby crying detection?

It depends on the hardware revision. The EC70's product-page spec table lists motion and sound detection as its alert triggers. TP-Link's 2024 V4.8 datasheet for the EC70 adds person detection and baby-crying detection. If baby-cry alerts are essential, check the hardware version before buying — or choose the EC71, where the feature is in the original user-guide spec table.

Does the Kasa EC70 need a subscription?

No. It records 24/7 to a local microSD card (up to 256GB per the current Kasa page) that you buy separately, and the Kasa app plays that footage back for free. Kasa Care cloud plans are optional extras.

What size microSD card does the Kasa EC70 support?

The current Kasa product page says up to 256GB. Older official documents listed smaller limits (the 2020 manual said 64GB) and the newest V4.8 datasheet says up to 512GB — the limit has grown across hardware revisions. A 128GB or 256GB card is the safe middle ground for current units.

Does the Kasa EC70 work with Alexa and Google Home?

Yes. It supports Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, including voice-activated live view on supported displays such as an Echo Show or a Chromecast-connected screen.
