Best Indoor Cameras for Apartments
In an apartment we prefer the Tapo C225: one outlet, a privacy shutter, pan and tilt, and a card. A fixed Wyze Cam v4 is the cheaper second camera.
Bestindoorcam.com may earn a commission if you buy through a store link. That does not change which camera we prefer. Read how affiliate links and ads work and how we review.
An apartment camera has to survive three constraints a house camera can ignore. You probably cannot run Ethernet. You should not drill a bracket into someone else's paint if the lease says so. And the camera is often in the only room you have, which means it can see the sofa, the laptop, and anyone who visits. Our preference is the TP-Link Tapo C225. It plugs in, it pans across a studio or a one-bedroom living area, and the physical shutter lets you end the recording without unplugging it and losing the angle.
The Wyze Cam v4 is the camera we add when the C225 cannot see around a corner, usually the entry door. It is fixed, it is 2.5K, and it also takes a microSD card. We do not start an apartment with a Blink Mini 2 unless you already pay for Blink. The hardware is cheap. The clip history you will want after a package disappears from the lobby is often not.
Point the lens at your door, not through the window at the corridor or the building across the street. Infrared bounces off glass at night and the picture becomes a white disc. A camera aimed at a shared hallway can also film neighbors who never agreed. If the lease bans cameras in common areas, the indoor side of your own door is the line.
Apartment cameras we would actually buy
| Camera | Why it fits | Why it might not |
|---|---|---|
| Tapo C225 | Pan, 2K, shutter, local card | 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only on the models TP-Link lists that way |
| Wyze Cam v4 | Sharp fixed view, local card, low price | No shutter, and color night uses a spotlight |
| Blink Mini 2 | Tiny, plugs in, works with Alexa | Useful history often needs a Blink plan or a Sync Module |
Wi-Fi bands and card limits are listed by the brands and should be checked on the box in your country.
Wi-Fi in a building full of routers
Apartment 2.4 GHz bands are crowded. A camera that only speaks 2.4 GHz, which is true of many Tapo indoor models including the C225 as TP-Link describes it, can still work if it sits near the router. If your video stutters only at night, it is often the microwave, the neighbor's router, or a mesh node in the wrong room, not the lens. A dual-band camera such as the eufy S350 is nicer and usually more money than a studio needs.
Do not put the camera and the router on opposite sides of a refrigerator or a brick column. Test the live view for one evening before you trust it. The plug-in guide explains why we are not sending you toward a battery camera you will forget to charge.
What we would not put in a studio
We would not buy a UniFi G5 Flex as a first apartment camera. It wants a PoE switch and a Protect console. That is a wonderful system in a house you own and a strange project in a lease. We would also skip a Nest or Ring indoor cam as the value pick. Both can be right if you already pay for the plan, which is the Google Home and Alexa question, not the apartment question.
Where to check the current price
Street prices move with sales. These links search a major retailer for the model named in this review. Confirm the exact model number on the listing before you pay.
Questions people ask before they buy
Can my landlord ban an indoor camera?
Often yes, in the lease, for common areas, and sometimes for alterations. A plug-in camera aimed only at your own room is the usual compromise. Read the lease. We are not your lawyer.
Is a pan camera worth it in a studio?
Yes, if one camera has to see the door and the main floor. In a true alcove, a fixed Wyze Cam v4 wastes less money.
Will the shutter stop the camera from recording?
On the C225, TP-Link includes a physical privacy shutter. Use it when you want the lens closed. Do not assume every Tapo model has one. The C210 is the older pan camera without that same story.
