TL;DR The Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro is Aqara's first outdoor camera hub: a fixed 2.6K Quad HD (2688×1520) camera with a 133° lens, True Color Night Vision and a built-in spotlight, wrapped around a Zigbee and Thread hub that also works as a Matter controller and bridge. It comes in two distinct versions — dual-band Wi-Fi powered by USB-C, or PoE over Ethernet — is IP65-rated for indoor or outdoor use, and supports HomeKit Secure Video, local AI detection and NAS/RTSP streaming. Trade-offs: only 8GB of built-in local storage, no pan or tilt, no microSD slot listed by Aqara, and a premium price over Aqara's indoor hub cameras.

Overview

Be clear about what this product is before anything else: Aqara positions the G5 Pro as an outdoor camera first, not as a pure indoor camera. That said, Aqara also rates it for indoor use, and many buyers will run it inside a garage, a covered porch, a workshop or a large room where they want one device that both watches the space and runs their sensor network. If your use is a normal living room or nursery, Aqara's smaller indoor hub cameras are usually the cheaper fit — the G5 Pro earns its price when you need weather resistance, a wired or dual-band connection, and a hub that covers the edge of the house.

It sits at the top of Aqara's hub-camera line. Our Aqara Camera Hub G3 review covers the indoor pan-and-tilt model, and our Aqara Camera Hub G2H Pro review covers the smaller fixed 1080p indoor option. The G5 Pro is different from both: higher resolution, an outdoor rating, colour night vision, and Thread on top of Zigbee.

Specs verified against Aqara's official product pages at eu.aqara.com and us.aqara.com. Two honest notes: Aqara's spec table lists local storage only as 8GB eMMC, so do not expect a memory-card slot; and Aqara does not state a maximum number of hub child devices for the G5 Pro on the pages we checked, so we do not quote one here — check Aqara's current support material if that limit matters to your setup.

Key features

A hub that finally reaches outdoors

The headline idea is placement. Earlier Aqara camera hubs had to live indoors, which could put the Zigbee and Thread radio in the wrong place for garden, driveway or outbuilding sensors. The G5 Pro combines the camera and the hub in an IP65 body with a rotatable stand for walls, ceilings and flat surfaces, and Aqara says it can also add Thread support for other brands' hubs and bridge connected Aqara devices into Matter systems. That breadth is why it belongs in any serious look at best indoor cameras for Apple HomeKit discussions for buyers whose "indoor" problem is really a whole-home coverage problem.

Wi-Fi or PoE — pick before you buy

These are two hardware versions, not one camera with both radios. The Wi-Fi version uses dual-band 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi with WPA3 and is powered over USB-C. The PoE version takes both data and power over a single Ethernet cable (IEEE 802.3af), with USB-C power also listed, and adds the RJ45 waterproof kit in the box. PoE is the more stable choice for a fixed outdoor mount if you can run cable; Wi-Fi is the flexible choice for an indoor or covered position near an outlet. Weight and price differ by version, so confirm the variant on the listing.

2.6K sensor, f/1.0 lens and colour at night

On paper the camera hardware is a step up from Aqara's indoor hub cameras: 2688×1520 resolution, a large 1/1.8-inch sensor, an f/1.0 aperture and a 133° field of view. At night Aqara combines True Color Night Vision with a 3W spotlight, rather than relying only on black-and-white infrared. We have not tested this camera, so treat that as a specification claim to weigh — not a measured result — alongside the PIR sensor that helps trigger recordings.

Local AI, HomeKit Secure Video and privacy

Aqara lists on-device visual and audio detection covering faces, vehicles, people, animals, packages, lingering people and lens obstruction, plus sounds such as alarms and a baby crying — and says local automations can keep running if the internet drops. For Apple households, HomeKit Secure Video support and end-to-end encrypted footage are the central privacy claims, alongside encrypted local eMMC storage. NAS, RTSP and a loud speaker

Beyond the 8GB of built-in storage, Aqara lists SMB NAS support for expanded local recording and RTSP for streaming into local video software. Two-way audio is paired with a speaker Aqara rates at 100 dB and customisable alert sounds, which is aimed at deterrence outdoors — and is worth thinking about before using those alerts at full volume indoors.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Camera, Zigbee/Thread hub, Matter controller and Matter bridge in one IP65 device
  • 2.6K Quad HD (2688×1520) with a 1/1.8-inch sensor, f/1.0 lens and 133° view
  • True Color Night Vision plus a built-in 3W spotlight
  • Choice of dual-band Wi-Fi or PoE versions, both clearly specified by Aqara
  • HomeKit Secure Video, on-device AI detection, RTSP and SMB NAS support
  • Wide operating range (-30°C to +50°C) for garages, porches and outdoor mounts

Cons

  • Only 8GB of built-in local storage and no microSD slot listed — plan on NAS or cloud for longer retention
  • Fixed camera — no pan, tilt or motorised tracking
  • Wi-Fi and PoE are separate versions; buying the wrong one is an easy mistake
  • Premium pricing well above Aqara's indoor-only hub cameras
  • Oversized and outdoor-styled for a typical living-room or nursery shelf
  • Aqara does not state a hub child-device limit on its product pages, unlike its older hub cameras

Who it's for

The G5 Pro is for smart-home buyers who want one hub-camera at the edge of the house: a driveway, garage, covered porch or workshop position where it can watch the space and anchor Zigbee and Thread devices nearby, while feeding HomeKit Secure Video, Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings. It also suits PoE households who prefer a wired camera and anyone building a Matter system who needs a controller and bridge in the same box.

It's not for: buyers who simply need a small, cheap indoor room camera — the G3 or G2H Pro fit that job for less — anyone who needs pan-and-tilt coverage, or anyone who expects weeks of local recording from built-in storage alone.

FAQ

Is the Aqara G5 Pro an indoor or outdoor camera?

Both, with outdoor first. Aqara calls it its first outdoor camera hub and gives it an IP65 rating and a -30°C to +50°C operating range, while also describing the housing as suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Many buyers will use it indoors or under cover in a garage or porch, but it is not an indoor-only design.

What is the difference between the G5 Pro Wi-Fi and PoE versions?

They are separate models. The Wi-Fi version connects over dual-band 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n/ac, WPA3) and is powered by USB-C at 5V⎓2A. The PoE version connects over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af), taking power and data from the same cable at 48V⎓0.27A, with USB-C power also listed; it is heavier (641 g vs 560 g), costs more on Aqara's stores, and includes an RJ45 waterproof kit.

Does the Aqara G5 Pro support HomeKit Secure Video?

Yes. Aqara lists HomeKit Secure Video compatibility, with end-to-end encryption for footage sent to Apple and Aqara clouds. As with other HomeKit Secure Video cameras, recording features depend on your iCloud plan and having a HomeKit hub in the home.

How does the G5 Pro store recordings?

Locally it has 8GB of built-in eMMC storage, which Aqara describes as encrypted, and it can expand storage through an SMB NAS. Aqara does not list a microSD slot in its specifications. Cloud options are HomeKit Secure Video via iCloud and Aqara's own cloud, for which Aqara lists a 30-day free trial on first connection; RTSP local streaming is also supported.

Does the Aqara G5 Pro work as a Matter and Thread hub?

Yes, per Aqara. It includes Zigbee and Thread radios, works as a Thread border router, and Aqara says it can act as both a Matter controller for Aqara and third-party devices and a Matter bridge for connected Aqara Zigbee devices. Aqara's product pages do not state a maximum child-device count, so we do not quote one.
